Medium used: Biro on paper
2014
For this project, I used biro pen in an attempt to capture the grim elegance of animal carcasses, and through this, the inattentive control humans have on the fate of our natural environment. Our constant exposure to roadkill is a stark reminder of how fragile the relationship between humanity and fauna is. The displacement of these indigenous animals from their natural surroundings, laying in isolated spaces, is expressive of their physical disconnection from their habitats as civilisation has brought about.
I have tried to provoke a more empathetic lens through close-up perspectives of the animal’s hands, depicting surprisingly beautiful and sometimes human-like features. The similarities act as a reminder of the interconnectedness of native species and humans, and how a fresh perspective is needed to become more thoughtful of not only their deaths, but their lives too.
